Pre-K

We've adopted Mrs. Butler's Pre-K class. One of the things we do to help is make "bed bugs." They are a reward for taking a nap.
Mrs. Butler goes through more bugs than she can make by herself.

Team Building

Service Learning is built into LEAP (Leadership, Education, and Academic Program). Part of leadership is being in service to others.

We do a lot of team building activities that develop different types of leadership skills. How long since you played with duplos? Our class divided up, boys against the girls with, each team having an equal amount of Duplo building blocks. Who can build the tallest structure?
They had to plan together. Come up with ideas and share them. Listen to others and consider their ideas. Build together. Fix problems, laugh and have fun together.

After time was called and the competition was over (the boys won by a smidgeon), the class regrouped and changed focus from competition to cooperation. As experienced builders and with twice as many Duplos they worked together to create the tallest structure possible.
They took time to do some serious planning and then they started building.

Service Learning 2009-2010

We will be doing our Service Learning projects this year in the ACE (Academic Commitment to Education) & LEAP (Leadership, Education and Academic Program) classes. As soon as we get parental permission, we will post pictures of our classes engaged in Service Learning.

The Ark

It's fitting that Noah drew an ark for the Beanie Babies to gather around in pairs.

We moved them to a smaller display to make room for the Beanie Bear Ship on the big table.

Bon Voyage Beanie Bears!

Kirsty, a student in a different class, helped us out by creating this ship for most of the Bear Beanie Babies.

They are hanging out on the ship until time to depart.

Beanie Babies to Iraq

Our Beanie Baby project started earlier this semester when Katherine Hunt forwarded me an email from Chris Boston that said, "JB asked that I let all know of a request on his behalf that if anyone would chip in and get some Beenie babies and send them it would be greatly appreciated as he and the other soldiers pass them out to the small Iraqi children." Thus a service project was born.
These are the first Beanie Babies that were donated. We sent them and a few others, a total of 15, in our first box to JB.

Our second shipment was somewhat bigger, 22 in all.

Things exploded when Zeke Campfield, a Lawton Constitution reporter, wrote an article about JB and how he got started giving Beanie Babies to children in Iraq. It was an excellent article that ended with Beanie Baby donation information. The Beanie Babies poured in.

Here are the first few hundred Beanie Babies that were brought or sent to the school library.
